DESIGN MATTERS: MEDIUM DENSITY SYMPOSIUM MARCH 2021

Facilitated by Whispering Smith Director Kate FitzGerald

Following the release of the draft Medium Density Code by the WA State Government, this special edition of OHP’s ongoing ‘Design Matters’ series will bring together representatives from government, architecture and design, planning and the development industry to present a united vision for Perth’s future density.

Some 800,000 new homes are expected to be needed in the Perth and Peel regions by 2050, and 47% of these new homes will be infill in suburbs that are full of existing identity and character. It is time to help shape a future in these places that is rich in sustainability, diversity, opportunity and amenity through the provision of well-designed medium density housing that enhances our growing communities.

The symposium program features an introduction to the draft Medium Density Policy by WA Planning Commission Chairman, David Caddy; honoured guest and Government Architect, Rebecca Moore; and addresses from a multi-disciplinary panel of contributors including landscape architects, architects and developers.

DIALING IN WITH KATE FITZGERALD OF WHISPERING SMITH

Habitus chats to Perth-based architect Kate Fitzgerald, founder of Whispering Smith, on what her practice looks like now and accomodating for the future.

In her own words Kate Fitzgerald describes Whispering Smith, the “staunchly feminist architecture firm working across both residential and commercial projects”, as a young and agile practice that has transitioned from start-up to officially emerged.

Despite a small team of the three, the office is usually a full, fun and lively space as they work out of warehouse shared with other creative practices. At present the team (Anna Harford and Nikita Filippou) is enjoying autumn outside in Perth – while they still can – as Kate navigates what their days will look like when they return to work – albeit from home.

Habitus spoke to Kate, curious to learn what, if anything, had changed for the studio in the past couple of weeks. Certainly nothing has dipped their spirits.
